PRESS BITS

"Whipple’s lyrics weave their way up through the spiral staircases of his careening adventures... Live, Whipple channels a vaudevillian, old-timey, creeped-out, almost carnie aesthetic that is well worth its weight in snake oil." -  Dante Zuñiga-West Eugene Weekly (entire article - at bottom)

"An itinerant folkie who’s traveled across the United States and Europe, Whipple channels the spirit of legends like Tom Waits and Django Reinhardt with his raw, playful songcraft." San Diego City Beat

"[Whipple] is his own Hedwig, Ziggy, Dr. Funkenstein: outrageous and otherworldly .... The finger-picked chords and the yawn-to-howl slide work conjure exactly the picture he wants, whether it's sad, spooky, plaintive or-in rare moments like “Expectations” just a little sanguine. " - Randy Harward Salt Lake City Weekly (entire aricle)

"Be it accordion, banjo or lap steel, Whipple’s old-fashioned one-man act is a pleasure to audiences with short attention spans."- Flag Live

"John enchantera outes les oreilles jamais fatigues de cette musique americaine des lors qu’elle sort des conventions et qu’elle apporte un peu de sang neuf… Du blues folk tout droit venu l’ouest lointain." - Ouest France

"Impressive..." - Anchorage Daily News

On the album Bible Milk -

"Bible Milk is a unique entity in the realm of contemporary alt-folk - while keeping some of the basic sound and themes traditional, John Whipple has managed to weave a weirdly beautiful tapestry of independently minimalistic, whimsical and soulful threads." Gothic Beauty Magazine

" Here is America as carnival show—nihilistic spoons and banjos galloping along with an untuned piano. Bible Milk nails the atmosphere..."- Missoula Independent

"One of the few CD's I've heard lately that made me think there were some people 'thinking outside the box' of what people want to hear..." Salt Lake Underground Magazine

Basing himself out of places as diverse as Portland Oregon , Arizona and Oostende Belgium , J.P.Whipple lives the life of a post-modern gypsy taking his one man – eleven piece - “orchestra” with him wherever he travels. After decades of playing in bands with styles as incongruous as klezmer, country, and swamp blues, Whipple integrates them all into a unique blend he dubs “vagabond roots”. As would be expected, his songs echoes his weary wanderings and are filled with scenes of debauchery, blue collar angst and a slight hint of mysticism that comes from a lifetime of seeking. He accompanies his usually comic tales with his “trash” drum kit and whatever lead instrument that seems to suit the song. It could be accordion, Dobro, lap steel guitar, or banjo. Though one man acts are almost prosaic these days, it is rare to find one so dedicated to entertaining today's short attention span audience. His performances are like Missouri weather. If you don't like what you hear, wait five minutes.
